Borm rigged a sling from the blanket and carefully pulled Nina out of the car. She had always been much lighter than her strength suggested and he lifted her easily, holding her and the baby as close as he could. The child had not yet fed but had made only the faintest of noises. All of which seemed to be contented ones.

When they were a hundred feet away, he emptied the Glock’s clip into the fuel tank of the car and watched it burn. He hurled the gun as far as he could and walked into the forest.

He didn’t know exactly where he was going, only that the forest was a safe place for them. If Case had failed and the Wendigo was still haunting this place, then what possible interest could it have in them? Besides, their research suggested the cryptids did everything they could to avoid being within a hundred miles of each other. He was carrying two in his arms.

He wasn’t fit or strong but he kept walking until night fell, absolutely pitch black. And then he only stopped because he could no longer see where he was going. and would not risk falling and injuring Nina or the baby. He didn’t know any lullabies, nor had he remembered any stories from his childhood, but he kept talking to them both. He told them what he could see and what he could smell.

When at last Borm stopped, he collapsed to the ground holding them both to him and gently weeping. The child’s skin was warm but Nina’s was cold and clammy. He kissed her forehead and felt the chill in his lips. He knew if he didn’t build a fire or find something for her to eat or drink, she wouldn’t make it through the night.

He laid them down beside each other, making a small nest from the undergrowth. He should have brought the tarp from the back of the truck before torching it. Stupid mistake. What good was a scientist without equipment, a doctor without the tools he needed to heal?

‘Heal’ was a word he had not used, not even thought about, for many years. His job was the opposite of that. To destroy, conquer and torture, never to heal, and yet it had been part of his oath, albeit a part he had never taken seriously. Until now.

He rummaged through his pockets, removing what he’d taken from the man he’d murdered in town. The wallet was fat but not much cash inside, thirty dollars. Not that it mattered how much money he had. There weren’t too many 7-Elevens out here. A battered packet of cigarettes, some receipts and a book of matches from some bar. He flipped open the book. It was full.

It took longer than he’d imagined to light a fire, but several matches later he managed it. It was a meager flame but it was something. He sat back with a vague feeling of satisfaction in his belly, watching the flames for a few seconds before jumping up to collect more wood.
